Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers Microsoft's cloud services. The team is responsible for designing, building, and operating our unified global datacenters; managing the demand planning and capacity utilization of our unified infrastructure; and responsible for all of the operations needed to run the physical infrastructure (including supply chain, hardware, power, security, and workflow teams). We focus on smart growth with an emphasis on automation, data driven engineering, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.

We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform. Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 100 datacenters and 1 million servers. Our portfolio is built and managed by a team of subject matter experts working 24/7/365 to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide.

At the forefront of the action in CO+I is our Global Datacenter Operations group (GDCO)!

The Critical Environments Solutions Engineering group (CESE) within GDCO is responsible for establishing global Critical Environment (CE) infrastructure requirements and standards, developing and delivering CE efficiency and optimization programs and projects, and supporting 24/7/365 mission-critical CE instrumentation infrastructure within Microsoft's global Datacenters.
Responsibilities:

CESE is seeking a Service Engineer to join our Server Infrastructure team. This role works in a diverse global team environment sharing responsibility for designing, automating, securing, configuring, and delivering support for the CESE server infrastructure & related programs and projects in existing and future Datacenters. Programs, projects, and operational support fall within the areas of: server monitoring ensuring SLAs and KPIs are met and maintained, security conscience, server\OS\firmware management and maintenance, 24/7/365 server and infrastructure operations support, compliance, builds and deployments, commissioning, proof of concept pilots and optimization. You will work closely with peer infrastructure engineering, application, support, Datacenter design and build teams including key decision makers across CO+I. You will develop and rely heavily on key partnerships with global Datacenter Operations teams at varying levels of the business, CO+I teams' responsible for the design and delivery of Datacenters, Azure network engineering and architecture teams, and all groups affiliated with Microsoft Datacenters (Business & Property groups).

A successful candidate will possess a range of experience in the areas of Server and Service Operations, Server and Service Engineering, security conscience server configuration and maintenance, automation methodologies that enhance infrastructure services, devices, as well as providing 24/7/365 operational support for business-critical server and service infrastructures. Experience should include Windows Server, Hyper-V, Active Directory, DNS, PowerShell and Line of Business application service engineering, architecture and design experience, service metric and KPI reporting, documentation skills, along with interpersonal awareness, proactivity, and a proven ability to manage and drive delivery of multiple simultaneous cross-group dependent server and service-based projects. The candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills with an ability to speak and present effectively to all levels of business.
Qualifications:

Knowledge, experience, and skills:
  • Minimum 4 Years' experience in deploying, supporting automating, securing, and maintaining server and application service architectures for large cloud-scale infrastructures
  • Experience with Microsoft server & tooling platforms for infrastructure services such as Windows Server 2019, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, PowerShell scripting, SMTP Relay, Data Protection Services, service monitoring, incident alarming, compliance, and other services to aid in fulfilling operational monitoring, audit logging of events, compliance requirements, outages, or security-related issues
  • A solid understanding of UNIX-based operating systems, especially enterprise level Linux distributions, including system installation / configuration, file system concepts, resource monitoring, user administration, package management, and process control / management
  • Demonstrated experience for transitioning manual operational processes to automation while leveraging DevOps principles
  • Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent projects
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a global team environment while helping bring projects to successful outcomes and delivering useful documentation artifact
  • Ability to balance competing demands for resources and adapt to changing priorities
  • Proven ability to apply clear critical thinking in complex, stressful situations


Preferred, not required:
  • Prior experience maintaining Datacenter Critical Environment systems and applications
  • Experience defining and documenting designs, implementation, and support processes for the ongoing operational support of the Windows & Linux servers and supporting service infrastructures
  • Configuration management experience with PowerShell DSC, Puppet, Chef or similar
  • Travel will be involved
